Mitro’s on fire, social media’s terrified!

Any football fan will be aware of Newcastle United’s current dominance in the Championship, after being relegated last season they are now top of the table and three points in front of the next closest team.

One of their standout players so far has been Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has become somewhat a cult hero to the fans, due to his passionate performances on the pitch.

Newcastle have taken to the player so much that on the terraces of St. Jame’s Park, the chant ‘Mitro’s on fire, your defence is terrified’ can frequently be heard.

Consequently, Newcastle fans have launched a petition online for the Tyne and Wear Metro to be renamed ‘Mitro’.

With the petition getting over a thousand supports, the Metro has taken notice and whoever runs the Metro twitter account offered a fantastic rscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-14-28-13esponse.

They replied to a Tweet from The Chronicle asking for their thoughts with: “’Mitro’s on fire’ could cause me all sorts of grief if that happened though…”

Making Twitter accounts for organisations such as The Metro is a great tool for PR as it makes it easy to communicate with people, build a rapport and also relay information quickly.

With the world becoming more and more social media friendly, it is important that organisations realise how important a tool it is.

 By doing this, organisations also become humanised and people feel they are more relatable. Social media is so important to PR; it would be extremely silly for it to be ignored. It is a great way to keep in contact and engage with influencers too.

It also helps build a personal brand. The best way to do this is to be active and make conversations. The above examples have done a great job of this and will have likely gained more followers through these hilarious responses.

Twitter, and social media in general, is very helpful for keeping on top of breaking news. By following fellow PR practitioners, journalists and competitors, you can keep up to date on everything that is going on, in real time. Through following these types of people and interacting with them, you can build better relationships and become trustworthy. Consequently, journalists are more likely to read or listen to your press releases if they know/recognise you, which is always helpful!

As an individual it is important to be active on social media as well. It gets your name out there so when you’re looking for a job, people might know who you are. Also, if you have a thriving social media account with great content, when potential employers look on your account before hiring you, they will hopefully see some great things.
